Step by Step Process 

Step 1 Apply on dates available at 4525 Boeing Drive Rockford Illinois 61109

Applications can be printed online from the link below. All applications must be submitted in person.

Step 2 Complete Personal Experience Form (PEF)

Step 3 Aptitude Test those who receive above the minimum cut score will receive an interview

Step 4 Show up for the interview (on time)

Scores from PEF, Aptitude Test, and interview will be merged together to establish a ranking.

Applicants will be assigned employment based on ranking.

If selected, apprentices will be assigned employment from the JATC. Selected apprentices will report for drug testing, OSHA 10-hour training, and 50 hours of pre-employment training.

Apprentices report for training six weeks (approximately once every six weeks)  a year which is unpaid. While employed apprentices earn an exception wage and benefit package, with annual increases throughout the five-year program.

Commonly asked Questions

How much does it cost me for my education?

Apprenticeship is “Earn while you Learn” there is no educational debt associated with apprenticeship.

How long is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is 5 years of classroom-related instruction along with on-the-job training. Apprentices start earning a living on day one with annual wage advancement of over $10,000 per year.

Can I apply for the Plumber/Pipefitter and HVACR programs in the same year?

Applicants can apply for Plumbing/Pipefitting or HVACR, but not both.

What are apprentice wages?

In 2022 1st year $20.88  2nd year $26.10  3rd Year $31.32  4th year $36.54  5th year $41.76

Plus additional benefits such as a pension, 401k, and health insurance.

Journeymen rate is $52.20 plus benefits. 

Where will I work?

Local 23 places apprentices with signatory contractors to work throughout Northwestern Illinois.

When would I start?

Apprentices are selected following interviews ( typically in March), and placed with employers May-September.

Do I have to know someone or be related to someone? 

Absolutely not and it has no impact on selection!
